New York Man Dies after Accident on Easton-Phillipsburg Toll Bridge

The Easton-Phillipsburg Bridge was the site of a fatal accident that occurred early in the month of May when a male driver’s vehicle struck a mini-van. The lone fatality of the accident, Dario Martinez, died from the injuries he suffered when his vehicle struck a mini-van on the toll bridge in Easton, New York. Martinez was pronounced dead at Easton Hospital by a deputy Northampton County coroner. Martinez died of blunt force trauma and the coroner ruled the death was accidental. The accident occurred at 4:20pm on the Easton side of the bridge which left Route 22 at a standstill because police closed the highway to investigate the accident. Martinez was traveling eastbound in a Toyota when he veered in the westbound lanes, struck a metal barrier, and then was struck by a vehicle driven by John Griffiths of New Jersey.

Griffiths and a passenger in his car were injured in the crash but not severely even though they were transported to Warren Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Martinez had to be cut out of his car by fire crews on the scene before he could be treated and transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police say that motorists in all vehicles involved were wearing seatbelts and the airbags went off in both vehicles in every spot that they were installed.
